Today, about 200 Moken people live in the Surin Islands .
Around 10 years ago, the Moken people started migrating to a village for
periods of time and some families started living in their boats during
dry season. But after the tsunami the Moken set up more permanent
residences.
In the past when the Moken had no permanent residences, they
often migrated because of the monsoon and changes in local winds.
Sometimes the weather made them migrate to build huts on land or to live
in their boats in the bays to defend them from the wind or the storm.
In addition, mobile migration gave them complete access to many
different food sources while at the same time not breaking down the
resources.
The Surin Islands includes 5 islands in the Andaman
Sea and is not far from Kuraburi district, Phangnga province, around 60
kilometers . The forests on the islands are fertile and there are corals
with a diverse and beautiful animal life which places the Islands on
the world list of diving spots.
