Moken departments

Moken departments

The fishermen group in Thailand consists of 3 groups, the Moken, the Moklen (Moken people called "Or-Lung-Ta-Mub") and the U-Lak-La-Woy. The Moken and Moklen have similar languages. The U-Lak-La-Woy speaks a language of Austronesia family as the same root but they can not communicate with Moken and Moklen because of the different vocabulary and articulation.

The U-Lak-La-Woy and Moken have permanent residences and their lifestyle has changed to become the same as for the Thai people. Therefore people from the outside often call them “Thaimai” (The new Thai).

The Moklen, or the land Lion, resides in Prathong Island , Kuraburi district, Phangnga province and Hla cape, Thalang district, Phuket province.

The U-Lak-La-Woy is a large group of people who live in Si-Hre Island and Rawai beach, Phuket province down to the southern of Phi-phi Island and Lanta Island , Phuket province, Adang Island , Hleepae Island , Rawee Island , Satun province and some live in Libong islands, Trang province.
The Moken or the sea Lion, reside in Prathong Island and Surin Island, Kuraburi district, Phangnga provinc, SinHai Island and Lao Island, Ranong Province and also in U-Lak-La-woy village in Rawai beach and Phi-Phi Island, Krabi province.
